Welch studied notes from the surgeon and determined that he had used so large a drainage tube that an enormous duodenal fistula resulted through the tube and the patients died of electrolyte imbalance . So when a patient of his in the late 1930s presented an inflamed duodenum and there was a no choice but to remove two-thirds of the stomach, Welch used a new method which he had been developing.
