The rocky and boulder shores toward the south of the lough are dominated by the seaweed knotted wrack " Ascophyllum nodosum ".

It is considered by some as parasitic; however, as it only receives structural support from knotted wrack ( not parasitically ), it acts as an epiphyte.

Usually devoid of vegetation, that may be present include smooth cordgrass ( " Spartina alterniflora " ), marine algae such as knotted wrack ( " Ascophyllum nodosum " ) and rockweeds ( Fucus spp . ).

Along the lower shore the coarse grained rocks are partly covered by brown seaweeds such as Flat wrack " ( Fucus spiralis ) " and Knotted wrack " Ascophyllum nodosum ", while pools and crevices in the rocks provide shelter for a wide variety of algal species, such as the red seaweed " Corallina officinalis ".
