He recorded in his journal " In the quartile near ? Tauri . . . either [ a ] Nebulous star or perhaps a comet ".

On 17 March he noted, " I looked for the Comet or Nebulous Star and found that it is a Comet, for it has changed its place ".

There, while observing Comet De Ch�seaux with Jacques Cassini in 1746, he discovered two " nebulous stars ", which later turned out to be globular clusters Maraldi in 1935.

Observing with the naked eye, he saw an object resembling a faint, nebulous star : he was at first unsure if it was a comet or part of the Milky Way.

He probably also cataloged the Omicron Velorum star cluster as a " nebulous star ", and an additional " nebulous object " in Vulpecula, a cluster now variously known as Al-Sufi's Cluster, the " Coathanger asterism ", Brocchi's Cluster or Collinder 399 . Moreover, he mentions the Large Magellanic Cloud as Al-Bakr, the White Ox, of the southern Arabs as it is visible from Southern Arabia, although not from more northern latitudes.

He waited until 1802 ( in " Catalogue of 500 new Nebulae, nebulous Stars, planetary Nebulae, and Clusters of Stars; with Remarks on the Construction of the Heavens " ) to announce the hypothesis that the two stars might be " binary sidereal systems " orbiting under mutual gravitational attraction, a hypothesis he confirmed in 1803 in his " Account of the Changes that have happened, during the last Twenty-five Years, in the relative Situation of Double-stars; with an Investigation of the Cause to which they are owing ".
