The genus contains two species, the Indian Rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros unicornis " ) and the Javan Rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros sondaicus " ).

Indications for the occurrence of Vietnamese Javan rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus " ) and northern Sumatran rhinoceros ( " Dicerorhinus sumatrensis lasiotis " ) in the area are recorded from the 1980s, but have not been confirmed since then.

Other mammals, such as the Borneo proboscis monkey " ( Nasalis larvatus ) ", the Sumatran rhinoceros " ( Dicerorhinus sumatrensis ) " and the Javan rhinoceros " ( Rhinoceros sondaicus ) ", are also seriously threatened, as both species have been reduced to critically low numbers.

Species of mammals, some discovered relatively recently, include the following ( Robichaud 2005 ) : saola, giant muntjac, Roosevelt's muntjac, Truong Son muntjac, Indochinese warty pig, Heude's pig, Annamite striped rabbit, Javan rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus " ), Indochinese tiger, and Asian elephant.

In addition to the remains of " P . t . soloensis ", many other fossils from the same era have been discovered in Ngandong, like the proboscideans " Stegodon trigonocephalus " and " Elephas hysudrindicus ", the bovines " Bubalus palaeokerabau " and " Bos paleosondaicus ", the extant perissodactyls " Tapirus indicus " and " Rhinoceros sondaicus ", and a great variety of cervine species . " Homo erectus " fossils are also known from the area.

Some species such as hog deer ( " Axis porcinus " ), water buffalos ( " Bubalus bubalis " ), barasingha or swamp deer ( " Cervus duvauceli " ), Javan rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros sondaicus " ), single horned rhinoceros ( " Rhinoceros unicornis " ) and the mugger crocodiles or marsh crocodiles ( " Crocodylus palustris " ) started to become extinct in the Sundarbans towards the middle of the 20th century, because of extensive poaching and man hunting by the British.
