Their warning was delivered in the famous letter of Paul Berg and his colleagues in 1974 , calling for a ban on genetic research or at least a tight control by stringent guidelines . 1974 में पॉल बर्ग तथा उसके सहयोगियों द्वारा लिखे गये पत्र में चेतावनी देते हुए यह मांग की गयी थी कि आनुवंशिक इंजीनियरी में अनुसंधान कार्य करने पर संपूर्ण पाबंदी लगा दी जाये अथवा ऐसे प्रयोग केवल कड़े नियंत्रण के अंतर्गत किये जायें तथा इस हेतु कठोर निर्देशक नियम बनाये जायें .

Following the golden rule that whereof one cannot speak thereof one must remain silent , he published nothing about his work on them . He might have drawn an equal blank from his experiments with ordinary garden peas . But he had the serendipity to ignore experimental results that produced peas showing “ irregular and inconstant variation ” . बगीचे में उगाये जाने वाले सामान्य मटर के पौधों पर उन्होंने जो अनुसंधान कार्य किया था उसका लाभ भी उन्हें नहीं मिलता यदि इन प्रयोगों के दौरान प्राप्त किये गये कुछ ' अनियमित तथा अस्थिर ' परिणामों को अनदेखा करने की एक असाधारण प्रतिभा उसके पास नहीं होती .

The first glimmer of the new understanding that the basic mechanism of changes in protozoa and bacteria is the same as in higher plants and animals , namely , mutation , came with O.T . Avery 's celebrated experiment with the bacteria that cause lobar pneumonia , the pneumococcus , in 1946 . जीवाणुओं तथा प्रजीवाणुओं में होने वाले परिवर्तन भी उन्नत जीवों तथा पौधों में होने वाले परिवर्तनों के समान ( उत्परिवर्तन ) ही होते हैं.इस बात की सही जानकारी हमें ओ.टी.एवेरी ने पालीशोथ1 उत्पन्न करने वाले न्यूमोकॉकस नामक जीवाणुओं पर जो प्रयोग किये उनसे प्राप्त हुई.1946 में किये गये प्रयोगों द्वारा उसने एक किस्म के न्यूमाकॉकस जीवाणुओं को दूसरी किस्म के जीवाणुओं में परिवर्तित कर लोगों का ध्यान अपने अनुसंधान कार्य की और आकर्षित किया .
