Israel now has the unenviable task of convincing the Arabs that their dreams of destruction will fail. Translated into action, that means resolve and toughness. It means becoming feared, not loved. The process will be neither domestically pleasant or internationally popular. But what choice is there? The failure of the Oslo negotiating process showed nothing so much as that attempts at a quick fix are doomed to fail. इजरायल को अरब को यह समझाना ही होगा कि उनका इजरायल को नष्ट करने का स्वप्न असफल हो जायेगा। इसे क्रियात्मक रूप देने का अर्थ है कि संकल्प और ढृढता । इसका अर्थ है कि वे डरें न कि प्रेम करें। यह प्रक्रिया न तो घरेलू स्तर पर सुखद है और न ही अन्तरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर लोकप्रिय। परंतु और क्या विकल्प है? ओस्लो समझौते की असफलता यह दिखाती है कि तत्काल समस्या के समाधान के प्रयास से असफलता ही मिलती है।

How goes the “war on terror”? One would think that the absence of a successful dramatic terrorist operation against Westerners since the London bombings in July 2005 would be heartening. But an atmosphere of gloom predominates. A recent much-publicized Foreign Policy magazine poll of 108 American specialists, myself included , found merely 6% who agreed that “The United States is winning the war on terror.” A whopping 84% disagreed. कोई यह सोच सकता है कि जुलाई 2005 में लन्दन के बम विस्फोटों के उपरान्त किसी सफल नाटकीय आपरेशन की असफलता के करण पश्चिमी प्रसन्न होगें। परन्तु निराशा का वातावरण हावी है । उदाहरण के लिए हाल में Foreign Policy Magazine ने मुझ सहित अमेरिका के 108 विशेषज्ञों का बहुप्रकाशित सर्वेक्षण किया जिसमें 6 प्रतिशत लोग ही इस बात से सहमत थे ‘कि अमेरिका आतंवाद के विरूद्ध युद्ध में विजय प्राप्त कर रहा है । बड़ी संख्या में 84 प्रतिशत लोग इससे असहमत हैं।

I agree with Ms. Benard's general approach, doubting only her enthusiasm for Muslim modernists, a group that through two centuries of effort has failed to help reconcile Islam with current realities. H.A.R. Gibb, the great orientalist, condemned modernist thinking in 1947 as mired in “intellectual confusions and paralyzing romanticism.” Writing in 1983, I dismissed modernism as “a tired movement, locked in place by the unsoundness of its premises and arguments.” Nothing has changed for the better since then. सुश्री बेनार्ड की सामान्य अवधारणा से मैं सहमत हूं परंतु दो शताब्दियों में वर्तमान वास्तविकताओं के साथ इस्लाम की तालमेल करने की असफलता के कारण उनके अतिउत्साह को लेकर संदेह है . महान प्राच्य विद्वान एच.ए.आर गिब्स ने आधुनिक चिन्तन को 1947 में बौद्धिक संशय और स्वच्छन्दतावाद को लकवाग्रस्त करने वाला करार दिया . 1983 में मैंने आधुनिकतावाद को एक थका हुआ आंदोलन बताया था जो अपने तर्कों के कारण सीमित हो गया है . तबसे लेकर आज तक कुछ भी परिवर्तित नहीं हुआ है .

Nowhere in the course of Mr. Siddiqi's extended rant (on my ignorance of Islam and its history, the failure of capitalism, the World Trade Organization's “remote-control modern slavery,” the alleged Judeo-Christian-Muslim heritage of America, and the “supreme need” for the Islamic system of life) does he take issue with the main point of my article-that he wants to see a United States made Muslim. Jan. 7, 2009 update : The National Post cleverly dubs my plan (in its title to this article) the “back-to-the-future option,” but I like best the name bestowed on it by blogger Mary P. Madigan : “the no-state solution.” Perfect. no one should expect a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza to end the Arab-Israeli conflict: It would merely move it to a new stage … A Palestinian state means new disasters for the Palestinian people and instability for the Arab states. स्वशासन की असफलता के उपरांत कुछ फिलीस्तीनी जार्डन के विकल्प का स्वागत कर रहे हैं। एक बिना नाम बताये फिलीस्तीन अथारिटी के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने डिकर और इंबारी को बताया कि जार्डन के साथ परिसंघ या महासंघ ही , “फिलीस्तीनी इजरायल संघर्ष का केवल एक सही , स्थाई और दीर्घगामी समाधान है” । हना सेनिओरा का कहना है, “ वर्तमान स्थिति में द्विराज्य समाधान की क्षीण सम्भावना हमें विवश करती है कि हम जार्डन के साथ महासंघ की सम्भावना पर पुनर्विचार करें” ।न्यूयार्क टाइम्स में हसन एम फतह ने जार्डन में एक फिलीस्तीनी को उद्धृत किया, “ हमारे लिये सब कुछ नष्ट हो चुका है हम पिछले 60 वर्षों से लड रहे हैं और कुछ भी नहीं बचा है। यह बेहतर होगा कि यदि जार्डन फिलीस्तीन में चीजों को संचालित करे यदि राजा अब्दुल्लाह पश्चिमी तट का नियंत्रण ले लें” ।
