Second, the argument that Western intervention would reduce the Islamist thrust of the rebellion by replacing materiel pouring in from Sunni countries is risible. Syria's rebels do not need Western help to bring down the regime (and wouldn't be grateful for it if they did receive it, if Iraq is any guide). The Syrian conflict at base pits the country's disenfranchised Sunni Arab 70-percent majority against Assad's privileged Alawi 12-percent minority. Add the assistance of foreign Islamist volunteers as well as several Sunni states (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) and the Assad regime is doomed. Assad cannot subdue the ever-widening rebellion against his rule; indeed, the more his troops butcher and maim, the more defections occur and his support shrinks to its Alawi core. दूसरा यह तर्क कि पश्चिमी हस्तक्षेप से विद्रोहियों की सामग्री के प्रति सुन्नी देशों के प्रति निर्भरता कम होने से उनका इस्लामवादी स्वरूप कम हो सकेगा एक निहायत ही हास्यास्पद तर्क है। सीरिया के विद्रोहियों को शासन गिराने के लिये पश्चिम की सहायता की आवश्यकता नहीं है ( और वे इसके लिये कृतज्ञ भी नहीं होंगे यदि उन्हें सहायता मिलती है यदि इराक को देखें तो) । अपने आधार स्वरूप में सीरिया का संघर्ष देश के 70 प्रतिशत बहुसंख्यक अरब सुन्नी जनसंख्या को छिने अधिकारों और 12 प्रतिशत अलावी अल्पसंख्यकों को मिले अधिकारों में निहित है। इसके साथ ही इन्हें विदेशी इस्लामवादी कार्यकर्ताओं का सहयोग है साथ ही अनेक सुन्नी राज्य ( तुर्की, सउदी अरब , कतर) और इसके कारण असद शासन पतन की ओर है। असद अपने शासन के विरुद्ध इस बढते विद्रोह को दबा नहीं सकते, इसके बजाय जितना अधिक उनकी सेना लोगों की हत्या करेगी उतना ही बिखराव होगा और उनके शीर्ष अलावी गुट में ही उनका समर्थन सिमटता जायेगा।
