The Baltimore Sun writes (dripping with sarcasm) that, “By unsealing a federal indictment against Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, the U.S. government garnered headlines about an alleged terrorist plot, instead of the unexplained imprisonment of an American citizen in Saudi Arabia. It portrayed Mr. Abu Ali has [sic] someone other than a victim of torture. The government may think its secret is safe. But it isn't.” अब भी अमेरिका में रहने वाले अबू अली ने उत्तरी वर्जीनिया के जिहादियों से संपर्क स्थापित कर रखा है जिनमें से 9 तो जेल तक जा चुके हैं . सन् 2000 में वह इस्लाम की शिक्षा प्राप्त करने मदीना के इस्लामिक विश्वविद्यालय गया . मई 2003 में रियाद में हुए एक विस्फोट के सिलसिले में सउदी प्रशासन ने अबू अली को गिरफ्तार कर लिया और अभी हाल में उसके अमेरिका वापस आने तक उसे जेल में रखा था. ज्ञातव्य हो कि इस विस्फोट में 34 लोग मारे गए थे जिनमें 9 अमेरिकी थे.

UPDATE 12/12/05: A new article by Daniel Pipes leads me to make this clarification: I do not know the quality of the information I was given by these sources. This has all been an extremely puzzling experience. I was approached with this evidence; I did not seek it out. It was confirmed by several parties. I presented it in good faith without ever saying (as some have charged) that it was necessarily accurate or true. But the circulation of this story-before and after I got it-explains why the Copts were so angry with Muslims in New Jersey at the time. As far as I know, the police examined this evidence and found it wanting. I do not know what the motives were of the friends of the Armanious family who told it to me and insisted on it, and continued to do so after the two thugs were arrested who were charged with this crime. I still have many unanswered questions.
