Aggressive Islam: The Koran and other authoritative Islamic scriptures do contain incitements against non-Muslims. The eminent historian Paul Johnson, for example, cites two Koranic verses: “Strongest among men in enmity to the Believers will you find the Jews and Pagans” (Sura 5, verse 85) and “Then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them. And seize them, beleaguer them and lie in wait for them.” (9:5). आक्रामक इस्लाम: कुरान तथा अन्य आधिकारिक इस्लामी धर्मग्रन्थों में गैर मुस्लिमों के विरुद्ध घृणा की बातें हैं। प्रमुख इतिहासकार पाल जानसन ने उदाहरण के लिये कुरान की दो आयतें उद्धृत कीं, “ विश्वासियों के शत्रुता के पुरुषों में सबसे अधिक शक्तिशाली आपको यहूदी और प्रकृतिपूजक मिलेंगे” (सूरा5, आयत 85) और “ प्रकृति पूजकों को जहाँ पाओ उन्हें मार डालो, उन्हें घेर लो , सेना सहित उन्हें घेर लो और उनके लिये घात लगाओ” ( 9:5)

Reformist Muslims must do better than their medieval predecessors and ground their interpretation in both scripture and the sensibilities of the age. For Muslims to modernize their religion they must emulate their fellow monotheists and adapt their religion with regard to slavery and interest, the treatment of women, the right to leave Islam, legal procedure, and much else. When a reformed, modern Islam emerges it will no longer endorse unequal female rights, the dhimmi status, jihad, or suicide terrorism, nor will it require the death penalty for adultery, breaches of family honor, blasphemy, and apostasy. सुधारवादी मुसलमानों को अपने मध्यकालीन पूर्वजों से अच्छा करना होगा और अपनी व्याख्या धर्मग्रंथों और युगानुकूल संवेदना के संदर्भ में करनी होगा। यदि मुसलमान अपने मजहब को आधुनिक बनाना चाहते हैं तो उन्हें गुलामी, ब्याज , महिलाओं के साथ व्यवहार , इस्लाम को छोडने के अधिकार , कानूनी प्रक्रिया सहित अन्य मामलों में अपने साथी एकेश्वरवादियों का आचरण पालन करना होगा। जब एक सुधरा हुआ आधुनिक इस्लाम विकसित होगा तो यह महिलाओं के साथ असमानता का अधिकार , धिम्मी स्तर , जिहाद , आत्मघाती आतंकवाद सहित विवाहेतर सम्बन्धों के लिये मृत्युदंड , पारिवारिक सम्मान के लिये घात , ईशनिंदा और धर्म छोडने जैसे विषय समाप्त कर देगा।

* Mild Koranic verses were abrogated. They argue that the Koran contains contradictory passages that Muslim scholars handled by deciding that chronologically latter verses superseded earlier ones. Specifically, the conciliatory verses I quoted (“There must be no coercion in matters of faith!” and “O people! We have formed you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another,”) were voided by one of the aggressive ones I cited (“Then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them. And seize them, beleaguer them and lie in wait for them”). My response, however, is that no matter what Islam is now or was in the past, it will be something different in the future. The religion must adapt to modern mores. * कुरान की नरम आयतें नष्ट कर दी गयीं . उनका कहना है कि कुरान में परस्पर विरोधी आयतें हैं और उनके बारे में मुस्लिम विद्वानों ने यह किया कि यह निश्चय हुआ कि समय के क्रम से बाद वाली आयतें प्रमुख मानी गयीं और पहले वाली आयतों का महत्व कम कर दिया । विशेष रूप से विरोधाभासी जिस आयत का उद्धरण मैंने दिया ( “ आस्था के सम्बन्ध में किसी बल का प्रयोग नहीं होना चाहिये” तथा “ हे लोगों, हमने तुम्हें राष्ट्रों और कबीलों में बनाया है ताकि तुम सब एक दूसरे को जान सको”) उनका स्थान एक आक्रामक आयत ने ले लिया जिसे मैंने कहा (“ प्रकृति पूजकों को जहाँ पाओ उनसे युद्ध करो और उन्हें मार दो, उन्हें बंदी बनाओ, उन्हें सेना सहित घेर लो और उनके लिये घात लगाओ”)
