Because of the American skepticism about Islamist goals, I postponed publishing an article on this subject until immediately after 9/11, when I expected receptivity to the subject would be greater (it was published in November 2001 as “ The Danger Within: Militant Islam in America ”). Finally, worrisome signs exist of a growing radicalization among American-born children of immigrants. Looking ahead, Iran represents the Middle East's greatest danger and its greatest hope. Its nuclear buildup, terrorism, ideological aggressiveness, and formation of a “ resistance bloc ” present a truly global threat, ranging from jumping the price of oil and gas to an electro-magnetic pulse attack on the United States. But if these dangers can be navigated, controlled, and subdued, Iran has a unique potential to lead Muslims out of the dark night of Islamism toward a more modern, moderate, and good neighborly form of Islam. As in 1979, that achievement will likely affect Muslims far and wide. यदि आगे की ओर देखें तो ईरान मध्य पूर्व का सबसे बडा खतरा और इसकी सबसे बडी आशा भी है। परमाणु कार्यक्रम की ओर प्रगति , विचारधारागत आक्रामकता और “ प्रतिरोध समूह” वास्तव में एक वैश्विक खतरा है जिसमें तेल और गैस की कीमतों को बढा देने के खतरे से लेकर संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका पर विद्युत चुम्बकीय हमले तक शामिल है। लेकिन यदि इन खतरों को टाला जा सके, नियन्त्रित किया जा सके और दबाया जा सके तो ईरान में इस बात की सम्भावना है कि वह मुसलमानों का नेतृत्व कर सके कि वह इन्हें इस्लामवाद के अंधेरे से आधुनिकता, नरमपंथ और इस्लाम के अच्छे पडोसी के स्वरूप की ओर ले जा सके। 1979 की भाँति यह उपलब्धि भी मुस्लिमों को दूर तक प्रभावित कर सके।
