And so , for the first time since the great revolt of 1857 , vast numbers of people again rose to challenge by force -LRB- but a force without arms -RRB- the fabric of British rule in India . और इस तरह सन् 1857 की महान क्रांति के बाद पहली बार जनता बहुत बड़ी संख़्या में हिंदुस्तान में अंग्रेजी हुकूमत के तान-बाने को ताकत से चुनौती देने के लिए फिर से उठ खड़ी हुई .

Above all , they have to strive their utmost to check indiscipline and the forces of chaos , for out of these neither independence nor socialism will emerge . . .. सबसे बड़ी बात तो यह है कि उन्हें अनुशासनहीनता और गड़बड़ी मचाने वाली ताकतों को पूरी ताकत से रोकने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए क़्योंकि इसके बगैर न तो आजादी मिल सकती है और न समाजवाद आ सकता है . . ..

Taking a handkerchief from his pocket he spat on it and rubbed the chalk away with unnecessary force , scraping off the peeling paint with it . जेब से रूमाल निकाला , अपने इक से उसे गीला किया और पूरी ताकत से दरवाजे पर खिंचे चाक के निशान को मिटा दिया । वह इतनी जोर से दरवाज़े को रगड़ रहा था कि चाक के निशान के संग दरवाज़े की लकड़ी का रंग भी उखड़ आया ।

Why antagonize powerful nations like Italy , Germany , and Japan , they said ; every enemy of Britain should be treated as a friend ; idealism has no place in politics , which concerns itself with power and the opportune use of it . उनका कहना था कि इटली , जर्मनी और जापान जैसे ताकतवर मुल्कों से क़्यों दुश्मनी की जाये ? ब्रिटेन के हर दुश्मन को दोस्त समझा जाये , राजनीति में आदर्शवाद के लिए कोई जगह नहीं है , राजनीति का ताल्लुक ताकत और मौका पड़ने पर उस ताकत से फायदा उठाने से है .

The conflict was inherent both in these methods and in the new situation that had arisen , yet back of all this was not political tactics and manoeuvring but the desire to strengthen the Indian people , for by that strength alone could they achieve independence and retain it . नये साधनों और नयी पर्Lस्थितियों , दोनों में , जो अब पैदा हो चुकी थीं , यही संघर्ष बीज की तरह था.लेकिन इस सबके पीछे कोई राजनीतिक चालें या पैंतरे नहीं थे , बल्कि हिंदुस्तान की जनता को मजबूत बनाने की ख़्वाहिश थी क़्योंकि इसी ताकत से वह आजादी हासिल कर सकती और उसे कायम रख सकती थी .

To a somewhat bare intellectual understanding was added an emotional appreciation , and gradually a sense of reality began to creep into my mental picture of India , and the land of my forefathers became peopled with living beings , who laughed and wept , loved and suffered ; and among them were men who seemed to know life and understand it , and out of their wisdom they had built a structure which gave India a cultural stability which lasted for thousands of years . मेरी जानकारी अब तक सिर्फ किताबी थी , लेकिन अब मैंने सब बातों को दिल से देखा-समझा और हिंदुस्तान के बारे में मेरी जानकारी , जो दिमाग में महज एक खाका भर थी , धीरे धीरे असलियत में बदलने लगी और मुझे ऐसा लगने लगा कि मेरे पुरखों की इस जमीन पर ऐसे लोग रहते थे , जो जिंदगी को सचमुच जानते और समझते थे और उन्होंने अपनी दिमागी ताकत से एक ऐसा ढांचा तैयार किया , जिससे हिंदुस्तान की संस्कृति इतनी पुख़्ता हो गयी कि वह हजारों साल से आज भी कायम है .
