Friedman has actually done some useful reporting, about water scarcity , from the city of Taiz in Yemen: I am in the Yemen International Hospital in Taiz, the Yemeni city in the central highlands that is suffering from such an acute water shortage that people get to run their taps for only 36 hours every 30 days or so. As one put it, “I would rather be in jail, they help me here.” The whole notion of women waging war and going to prison upsets Palestinian concepts of order. In the illustrative words of the deputy head of Hamas, “If a woman is in jail for a long time she will become a man” (meaning, they get wrong-headed ideas of independence). The Middle East's deep and wide political sickness points to the error of seeing the Arab-Israeli conflict as the motor force behind its problems. More sensible is to see Israel's plight as the result of the region's toxic politics. Blaming the Middle East's autocracy, radicalism, and violence on Israel is like blaming the diligent school child for the gangs. Television offers a unique medium for getting one's ideas out to large numbers of people, especially when presented in a lively debate format, so I regret not appearing on screen. This Abdo-army consensus has vast implications for Islam in America, suggesting that Muslims constitute a fifth column and cannot be loyal citizens. I disagree: Muslims can be patriotic Americans and exemplary soldiers. That said, the Abdo case once again points to the need for additional scrutiny of Muslims, whether serving in government or boarding aircraft . It's unfortunate, it's distasteful, but the common security demands no less.
