The revival of drama and the beginning of the novel in Indian languages restored to the Indian mind in a wider and richer form what it had possessed in the classical , but lost in the medieval agethe concept of life as a complex of subjective and objective reality and the art of portraying man in the setting of his physical and social environment in realistic proportion and natural colours . भारतीय भाषाओं में नाटकों के पुनरूत्थान तथा उपन्यासों के प्रारंभ से , वस्तुनिष्ठ एवं व्यक़्तिनिष्ठ वास्तविकता की विविधताओं के रूप में जीवन की अवधारण तथा मनुष्य को उसके भौतिक और सामाजिक वातावरण की व्यवस्था में यथार्थ रूप में स्वाभाविक रंगों में चित्रित करने की कला , जो पुरातन युग में थी किंतु मध्यकालीन युग में खो गयी थी , भारतीय मस्तिष्क में अधिक व्यापक और उन्नत अवस्था में पुन : वापिस आयी .

First , that what we are describing here is not the cultural life of the English or the Europeans in India but that of the Anglicised or Westernised Indians who tried to imitate them , and , secondly , that the description does not apply to all educated Indians who had the benefit of Western education as this included many good and great men who took a leading part in political liberation and cultural regeneration of the country . प्रथम यह कि जिसका हम यहां वर्णन कर रहे है , भारत में रह रहे अंग्रेजो या योरोपियनों का सांस्कृतिक जीवन नहीं है , बल्कि अंग्रेज समान या पश्चिमी प्रभाव वाला भारतीयों को है , जिन्होने उनकी नकल करने का प्रयत्न किया और दूसरा यह कि विवरण सभी शिक्षित भारतीयों पर लागू नहीं होता , जिन्हें पाश्चात्य शिक्षा का लाभ मिला क़्योंकि इसमे बहुत से अच्छे महान व्यक़्ति भी शामिल है , जिन्होने देश की राजनैतिक स्वतंत्रता तथा सांस्कृतिक पुनरूत्थान में प्रमुख भाग लिया .
