Second, the Soviet menace during the cold war prompted American leaders, impatient with Europe's (and Canada's) weak responses, effectively to take over their defense. This benign and far-sighted policy led to victory by 1991, but it also had the unintended and less salutary side-effect of freeing up Europe's funds to build a welfare state. Other apologetics are more consequential. But no commentator is so impolite as to note that however admirable this was in the 7th century, Muslim women today suffer widely from genital mutilation, forced marriages, purdah, illiteracy, sexual apartheid, polygamy and honor killings. दर्शकों को बताने का प्रयास किया जा रहा है कि मोहम्मद ने महिला भ्रूण हत्या का विरोध किया, महिलाओं को अधिकार दिलाया ,पत्नी को तलाक का अधिकार दिलवाया लेकिन किसी को वक्तताओं से विनम्रता पूर्वक यह पूछना चाहिए कि 7वीं शताब्दी में यह कितना भी प्रशंसनीय रहा हो वर्तमान में मुस्लिम महिलायें व्यापक पैमाने पर खतना, जबरन विवाह , पर्दा, अशिक्षा, लैंगिक भेदभाव, बहुविवाह और सम्मान के लिये मृत्यु से बड़े पैमाने पर घिरी हुई हैं।
