By way of demonstration, allow me to recall the similar Muslim-Western confrontation that took place in 1989 over the publication of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses and the resulting death edict from Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini. It first appeared, as now, that the West aligned solidly against the edict and the Muslim world stood equally with it. As I wrote last September, when Jones threatened to burn a Koran, the “violence stems from Islamic law, the Sharia, which insists that Islam, and the Koran in particular, enjoy a privileged status.” That insistence, which has been asserted in the West since 1989, when Ayatollah Khomeini put an edict on Salman Rushdie for his novel, The Satanic Verses , must not be indulged. Islam is one religion among others, with no claim to superior status. Jan. 15, 2009 update : The secretary of defense commissioned something he calls the “DoD Independent Review Related to Fort Hood” to figure out what went wrong in the Hasan case. It dutifully produced a 53-page document with lots of appendices titled Protecting the Force: Lessons from Ft. Hood . Suffice to say that the word Islamic appears just once (in the title of a cited reference) and the words Islam , Muslim , and jihad appear not a single time. Thus does the farce of continue; rather than address the army's denial about Islamism, this review commission perpetuates it. Oct. 15, 2010 update : Enough of the smiling pictures of Hasan. Indeed, the 2010 incident caused some 19 deaths in Afghanistan, prompting David Goldman , then of First Things magazine, to observe that “a madman carrying a match and a copy of the Koran can do more damage to the Muslim world than a busload of suicide bombers.… What's the dollar value of the damage from a used paperback edition of the Koran?” Goldman speculated how intelligence services could learn from Jones and, for a few dollars, sow widespread anarchy. So far, the 2012 spasm has led to four American deaths, with more possibly to follow. Jones (with his “ International Judge Muhammad Day ”) and Sam Bacile (who may not exist but is alleged to have created the anti-Islamic video that mainly inspired this 9/11's violence) can not only cause deaths at will but they can also put a wrench in U.S.-Egypt relations and even become a factor in a U.S. presidential election. रुश्दी संकट अचानक तब उत्पन्न हुआ जब ईरान के शासक अयातोला खोमैनी ने एक उपन्यासकार द्वारा लिखे गये एक जादुई वास्तविक उपन्यास The Satanic Verses को “ इस्लाम, पैगम्बर और कुरान” के विरुद्ध घोषित करते हुए इस लेखक के विरुद्ध मौत का फतवा जारी कर दिया। इस घटना के उपरांत ऐसे आक्रमणों की लम्बी सूची बनती गयी ,1997 में अमेरिका के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय में प्रतिमा को लेकर, 2002 में अमेरिका के धर्मान्तरण समर्थक नेता जेरी फालवेल, 2005 में न्यूजवीक पत्रिका, 2006 में डेनमार्क के कार्टून का विषय, 2006 में ही पोप बेनेडिक्ट 16 का मामला, 2010 में फ्लोरिडा के प्रचारक टेरी जोंस का मामला, 2012 के आरम्भ में अफगानिस्तान में अमेरिकी सैनिकों का मामला इस लम्बी सूची में शामिल रहा। इन सभी मामलों में इस्लाम के प्रतीत होने वाले अपमान के चलते हिंसा की घटनायें हुईं जो कि कुछ अवसरों पर पश्चिम के विरुद्ध हुईं परंतु अधिक अवसरों पर मुसलमानों में आपस में ही घटित हुईं।
