Since Israel came into existence in 1948, Democrats and Republicans have changed places in their attitudes toward Israel. In the first era, 1948-70, Democrats sympathized more with the Jewish state and Republicans distinctly less so. Whereas Democrats emphasized spiritual bonds, Republicans tended to see Israel as a weak state and as a liability in the Cold War. 1948 में इजरायल के अस्तित्व में आने के बाद से डेमोक्रेट और रिपब्लिकन ने इजरायल के सम्बन्ध में अपने स्थान बदले हैं . 1948-70 के प्रथम काल में डेमोक्रेट यहूदी राज्य के प्रति अधिक सहानुभूति रखते थे जबकि रिपब्लिकन की सहानुभूति यहूदियों के प्रति कम थी. जहाँ डेमोक्रट आध्यात्मिक बन्धन पर अधिक जोर देते थे रिपब्लिकन की दृष्टि में इजरायल एक कमजोर और शीतयुद्ध की जिम्मेदारी था.

The negative prong consists of fighting terrorism. A “war on terror” is underway, involving military forces in the field, toughened financial laws, and an array of espionage tools. The positive prong involves promoting democracy. The historical record shows that democratic countries almost never make war on each other, and tend to be prosperous. Therefore, elections appear to be what the doctor ordered for the maladies of the Middle East. यह दुतरफा बन्धन हमारा ही बनाया हुआ है क्योंकि अमेरिका के नेत्रत्व में पश्चिम की प्रत्येक सरकार ने मध्यपूर्व की समस्या के समाधान के लिये द्विभुजीय पहल की. इसमें नकारात्मक पहल आतंकवाद के विरुद्ध युद्ध की थी. आतंकवाद के विरुद्ध युद्ध जारी है,जिसमें क्षेत्र में सेनायें तैनात हैं.वित्तीय कानूनों को कङा कर दिया गया है और जासूसी उपकरणों को सक्रिय कर दिया गया है.

Second, the solidarity and consensus of old have unraveled. This process has been underway for just over a century now (starting with the British side of the Boer War in 1899-1902). As I wrote in 2005: “The notion of loyalty has fundamentally changed. Traditionally, a person was assumed faithful to his natal community. A Spaniard or Swede was loyal to his monarch, a Frenchman to his republic, an American to his constitution. That assumption is now obsolete, replaced by a loyalty to one's political community - socialism, liberalism, conservatism, or Islamism, to name some options.
