The Hindu physicians of yore knew of the fact that the urine of the diabetic tasted sweet and they recorded in their observations that if too many ants swarm around a spot of urine , one can conclude that the person is diabetic . पुराने भारतीय चिकित्सकों को इस तथ्य का ज्ञान था कि मधुमेह के रोगी का मूत्र चखने में मीठा होता है और यदि त्यागे गये मूत्र के चारों और अनेक चींटियां आ जायें तो यह निष्कर्ष निकाला जा सकता है कि व्यक्ति को मधुमेह है .

The premonitory symptoms in diabetes , according to Charaka , are matting of hair -LRB- the well-to-do class of men in ancient times grew long hair -RRB- , sweet taste in the mouth and numbness and burning of the palms and the soles . चरक के अनुसार मधुमेह के पूर्वसूचक लक्षण हैं , बालों का छोटा होकर इकट्ठा हो जाना ( प्राचीन काल में अच्छे खाते-पीते परिवार के पुरूष लंबे बाल रखते थे ) , मुंह का मीठा स्वाद तथा हथेलियों और तलवों का सुन्न हो जाना तथा उनमें जलन .

Sushruta goes on to say that a person who consumes concentrated sweets in his diet will show the presence of sweetness in his urine , sweat and mucus secretions and thus suffer from diabetes -LRB- S . S.NNidanasthana 12/4 -RRB- . सुश्रुत का आगे कथन है कि जो वऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-यऋइ> भोजन में अधिक मीठा खाता है , उसके मूत्र , पसीने और शऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-लेषऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-मा स्रावों में मिठास आ जाती है और वह मधुमेह से ग्रसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त हो जाता है ह्य स . स . निदानासऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-थान 12/4हृ .
