Locusts are polymorphic grasshoppers that exist in three unstable phases viz . the solitary phase , the gregarious phase and the transient phase , differing in structure and habits . टिड्डियां बहुरूपी टिड्डे होते हैं जो तीन अस्थायी प्रावस्थाओं में पाई जाती हैं-एकल प्रावस्था , यूथी प्रावस्था और क्षणिक प्रावस्था .

Although belonging to the same species , the individuals of the solitary and gregarious populations differ so very much in their size , colour , proportions of various parts of the body and other characters that they may be mistaken for totally different species and even genera . हालांकि दोनों एक ही जाति की हैं लेनिक एकल और यूथी समष्टियों के व्यष्टि अपने आकार , रंग , शरीर के विभिन्न भागों के अनुपात और अन्य लक्षणों में इतनी ज़्यादा भिन्न होती हैं कि उन्हें गलती से एकदम ही भिन्न जाति और भिन्न वंश तक मान लिया जाता है .

Some desert species of grasshoppers that usually breed , feed and move about solitarily for several years , as greatly isolated individuals , become gregarious at periodical intervals , increase enormously in numbers in a favourable season and then migrate in great swarms , laying waste every green plant in the peaces where they may happen to settle temporarily during the migration . टिड्डों की कुछ मरू जातियां जो प्राय : पृथक व्यष्टियों के रूप में एकल प्रजनन करती , अशन करती और घूमती फिरती हैं उनकी संख़्या आवर्ती अंतरालों पर यूथी बन जाती हैं और अनुकूल ऋतु आते ही उनकी आबादी बहुत बढ़ जाती है और तब वे बड़े बड़े झुंडों में प्रवास करती हैं .
