Only by failing to account for human nature and by ignoring more than a millennium of actual changes in the Koran's interpretation can one claim that the Koran has been understood identically over time. Changes have applied in such matters as jihad , slavery, usury , the principle of “ no compulsion in religion ,” and the role of women. Moreover, the many important interpreters of Islam over the past 1,400 years-ash-Shafi'i, al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiya, Rumi, Shah Waliullah, and Ruhollah Khomeini come to mind-disagreed deeply among themselves about the content of the message of Islam. केवल मानवीय स्वभाव को समझने की भूल करके और पिछ्ली एक सह्स्राब्दी से अधिक समय से कुरान की व्याख्या में आये परिवर्तनों की अवहेलना करने से ही कोई इस बात का दावा कर सकता है कि प्रत्येक समय में कुरान को एक ही प्रकार से समझा गया है। अनेक मुद्दों में जैसे कि जिहाद, गुलामी , कर्ज पर ब्याज , मजहब में बाध्यता का सिद्धांत और महिलाओं की भूमिका को लेकर परिवर्तन आये हैं। यहाँ तक कि पिछले 1400 वर्षों में इस्लाम के अनेक व्याख्याकारों जैसे शफी अल गजाली, इब्न तैमिया , रूमी , शाह वलीउल्लाह और रुहोल्लाह खोमैनी का नाम हमारे मस्तिष्क में आता है जो कि इस्लाम के संदेश के विषय को लेकर आपस में एक दूसरे से असहमत हैं।
