If this base has few prospects of driving policy anytime soon, it offers a kernel of common sense that, if given suitable attention, can be built upon to foster long-term improvements. According to him, he sees the Islamization of America happening through a “long, peaceful process,” whereas I use “accusatory language without any proof” to suggest otherwise. Hardly: my article emphasizes precisely Mr. Siddiqi's point-that he envisages Islam peacefully taking over. So why the outrage? To get around these and other unrealistic demands, premodern Muslims developed certain legal fig leaves that allowed for the relaxation of Islamic provisions without directly violating them. Jurists came up with hiyal (tricks) and other means by which the letter of the law could be fulfilled while negating its spirit. For example, various mechanisms were developed to live in harmony with non-Muslim states. There is also the double sale ( bai al-inah ) of an item, which permits the purchaser to pay a disguised form of interest. (according to her biography for a Muslim Student Association event starting today).
