The reassertion of Lebanon's independence will fittingly reward an unsung steadfastness. The Lebanese may have once squandered their sovereignty, starting with the Syrian invasion of 1976 and culminating in the nearly complete occupation of 1990, but they showed dignity and bravery under occupation. Against the odds, they asserted a civil society , kept alive the hope of freedom , and retained a sense of patriotism. Lebanon's independence will also serve as a large nail in the coffin of the brutal, failed, and unloved Assad dynasty. If things go right, Syria's liberation should follow on Lebanon's. तीन दशक में पहली बार लेबनान अपनी स्वतंत्रता की ओर बढ़ रहा है . लेबनान के विदेश मंत्री अमीन गेमायेल के अनुसार अब सीरिया ठहर नहीं पायेगा. लेबनान द्वारा स्वतंत्रता का यह आग्रह उनके निरंतर प्रयास का पुरस्कार है. लेबनान की संप्रभुता की समाप्ति का दौर 1976 में सीरिया के आक्रमण से शुरु हुआ जो 1990 में सीरिया द्वारा लेबनान पर कब्जे से खत्म हुआ. लेकिन विदेशी नियंत्रण में भी उन्होंने बहादुरी और शालीनता का प्रदर्शन किया . अनेक कठिनाईयों के बीच उन्होंने एक सभ्य समाज का आग्रह रखा , स्वतंत्रता की आशा को जीवित रखते हुए देशभक्ति की भावना को बनाए रखा.

In response to the phrase “some appeased mullah or sheik,” the executive director of CAIR's Canadian branch, Riad Saloojee , protested to the CIBC. We are gravely concerned that Mr. Rubin is promoting stereotyping of Muslims and Arabs in a CIBC publication. We request that Mr. Rubin and CIBC World Markets issue a letter of apology and undergo sensitization training regarding Muslims and Arabs. In a later formulation , Saloojee put his grievance more simply: “Many Muslims felt the comments were inappropriate.” वेंट ने अपने लेख में कनाडियन इम्पीरियल बैंक ऑफ कॉमर्स के वर्ल्ड मारकेटिंग विभाग के प्रमुख अर्थशास्त्री जेफरी रुबिन का मामला उठाया है . अप्रैल 2005 को अपने ग्राहकों से भविष्यवाणी करते हुए श्री रुबिन ने कहा कि तेल की कीमतों में बढ़ोत्तरी जारी रहेगी . उन्होंने कहा कि 1970 में तेल की कीमतों में अचानक दो बार आई उछाल तब हुई थी जब कुछ राजनीतिक घटनाओं ने तेल उत्पादकों को इस बात के लिए विवश किया था कि वे अपने उत्पाद पर पूरी संप्रभुता रखें और कुछ समय के लिए आपूर्ति रोक दें . इस समय भी परिस्थिति में ऐसा कोई अंतर नहीं आया है कि संतुष्ट मुल्ला और शेख अचानक पीठ दिखा दें . “संतुष्ट मुल्ला और शेख ” शब्द के प्रयोग पर सीएआईआर के कनाडियन शाखा के कार्यकारी निदेशक रियाद सलूजी ने कनाडियन बैंक ऑफ कॉमर्स से शिकायत की . उन्होंने कहा कि हमें इस बात की बहुत चिंता है कि श्री रुबिन अरब के मुसलमानों के विशेषण को बहुत हलका कर रहें हैं. हम चाहते हैं कि श्री रुबिन और कनाडियन बैंक माफी मांगे , मुसलमानों और अरब के संबंध में अधिक संवेदनशील बनें.बाद में सलूजी ने इसे और भी संक्षिप्त करते हुए कहा कि बहुत से मुसलमानों की दृष्टि में यह कथन अनुचित है. वैसे सलूजी का यह तर्क बेवकूफी भरा है जबकि सब जानते हैं कि इरान के मुल्ला और अरब के शेख तेल की कीमतों का भाव निर्धारित करते हैं लेकिन इससे कनाडियन बैंक को कुछ भी लेना देना नहीं है . उन्होंने सलूजी की मांग मानते हुए सार्वजनिक रुप से माफी मांग ली और जिस रुबिन के बारे में उन्होंने कहा था कि वह कनाडा के प्रमुख अर्थशास्त्रियों में हैं उन्हें संस्कृति की विविधता समझने के लिए प्रशिक्षण पर भेज दिया गया .इस प्रशिक्षण के संबंध में वेंट ने अपने लेख में कुछ रोचक जानकारियां दी हैं जो कि ओटावा स्थित विविधता के विशेषज्ञ ग्रे ब्रिज माल्कम के कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष लारायन कामिस्की द्वारा दिया गया . कामिस्की ने रुबिन के लिए विशेष तौर पर पाठ्यक्रम तैयार किया और कनाडियन बैंक ने रुबिन के दो घंटे के प्रशिक्षण के लिए हजारों डॉलर दिए .
