Islam itself - the centuries-old faith - is not the issue but one extremist variant of it is. Militant Islam derives from Islam but is a misanthropic, misogynist, triumphalist, millennarian, anti-modern, anti-Christian, anti-Semitic, terroristic, jihadistic and suicidal version of it. Fortunately, it appeals to only about 10% to 15% of Muslims, meaning that a substantial majority would prefer a more moderate version. सैकडों वर्ष पुराना मजहब इस्लाम मुद्दा नहीं है परंतु इसकी अतिवादी शाखा मुद्दा है। उग्रवादी इस्लाम यहीं से निकलता है परंतु यह शत्रुवत, नारी विरोधी , शत्रु की पराजय पर प्रसन्न होने वाला , सहस्राब्दी भावना वाला , आधुनिकता विरोधी , ईसाई विरोधी , सेमेटिक विरोधी , आतंकवादी भाव वाला , जिहादी मानसिकता वाला और इसका आत्मघाती स्वरूप है। सौभाग्य की बात यह है कि यह मुसलमानों का 10 से 15 प्रतिशत ही है , इसका अर्थ है कि बडी संख्या में बहुसंख्यक नरम संस्करण के पक्षधर हैं।

To render Islam consistent with democratic ways will require profound changes in its interpretation. For example, the anti-democratic law of Islam, the Shari‘a, lies at the core of the problem. Developed over a millennium ago, it presumes autocratic rulers and submissive subjects, emphasizes God's will over popular sovereignty, and encourages violent jihad to expand Islam's borders. Further, it anti-democratically privileges Muslims over non-Muslims, males over females, and free persons over slaves. इस्लाम को लोकतांत्रिक मार्ग के अनुकूल बनाने के लिये इसकी व्याख्या में जबर्दस्त परिवर्तन करने होंगे। उदाहरण के लिये इस्लाम का अलोकतांत्रिक कानून जिसे शरियत कहते हैं वह समस्या के मूल में है। एक सहस्राब्दी पहले विकसित हुआ यह अधिनायकवादी शासकों और समर्पित प्रजा की कल्पना करता है, लोकप्रिय सम्प्रभुता के ऊपर ईश्वर की इच्छा रखता है और इस्लाम की सीमाओं को विस्तृत करने हेतु हिंसक जिहाद को प्रेरित करता है। इससे भी आगे यह अलोकतांत्रिक ढंग से गैर मुसलमानों के ऊपर मुसलमानों को, महिला के ऊपर पुरुष को और गुलामों के ऊपर स्वतंत्र व्यक्ति को विशेषाधिकार प्रदान करता है।

Islamic law, in retreat over the previous two centuries, came roaring back, and with it jihad , or sacred war. The caliphate , defunct in real terms for over a millennium, became a vibrant dream. Ideas proffered by such thinkers and organizers as Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, Shah Waliullah , Sayyid Abu'l-A'la al-Mawdudi, Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, and Rouhollah Khomeini aggressed successfully against traditional, modernist, and centrist approaches to Islam. To advance the poisoned vision of these utopians, their followers adopted violent means, including terrorism. इसका परिणाम यह हुआ कि पिछली दो शताब्दियों से नेपथ्य में रहने के बाद इस्लामी कानून गर्जना के साथ वापस आया और साथ ही जिहाद भी. एक सहस्राब्दी तक वास्तविक अर्थों में अस्तित्वहीन रहने के बाद खिलाफत एक आकर्षक स्वप्न बन गया. मोहम्मद इब्न अब्द अल वहाब, शाह वलीवुल्लाह, सैयद अबू अल अला अल मौदूदी, हसन अन बना, सैयद कुतब और रौहोल्लाह खोमैनी जैसे प्रबन्धकों और विचारकों ने इसे प्रचारित करते हुये इस्लाम की परम्परागत, आधुनिकवादी और केन्द्रस्थ पहुँच को सफलतापूर्वक आक्रान्त कर लिया. इन कल्पनाओं की विषाक्त धारणाओं को आगे बढ़ाने के लिये इनके समर्थकों ने आतंकवाद सहित हिंसक तरीके अपनाये.
