However golden the harvest and heavy the dividends , the mud huts and hovels and nakedness of our people testify to the glory of the British empire and of our present social system . फसल कितनी ही अच्छी क़्यों न हो , मुनाफा कितना ही ज़्यादा क़्यों न हो , लेकिन हमारे मुल्क के लोगों की मिट्टी के घर और टूटी-फूटी झोपड़ियां , यहां के नंगे , कुचैले लोग , अंग्रेजी हुकूमत और हमारी मौजूदा सामाजिक व्यवस्था की बेसाख़्ता तस्वीर पेश करते हैं .

It was a close-knit social order well adapted to the needs of the changing times because it , could weather all kinds of upheavals in society till it was exposed to the inroads of the modern European industrial system which began in the 18th century . यह बदलते हुए समय की आवश्यकताओं के अनुसार निर्मित एक सुदृढ़ सामाजिक व्यवस्था थी.यह तब तक समाज में होने वाले सभी प्रकार के उतार चढ़ावों को सहन कर सकती थी जब तक कि इसके सामने 18वीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ में हुए आधुनिक यूरोप की औद्योगिक प्रणाली का अतिक्रमण प्रकट नहीं हुआ .

On the whole, Muslims lived up to these Islamic ideals for male-female relations in premodern times. Yet the anxiety persisted that women would break loose of their restrictions and bring perdition to the community. मुसलमानों की समस्त सामाजिक व्यवस्था स्त्री की कामेच्छा को सीमित करने वाली समझी जा सकती है . यह विपरीत लिंगियों को अलग कर उनके मध्य संपर्कों को कम करता है . इस विचार के आधार पर महिलाओं के चेहरे को ढंकना और महिलाओं के आवासीय क्षेत्रों(हरम) को अलग-अलग करने की व्याख्या की जा सकती है . अनेक अन्य संस्थायें भी पुरुष की अपेक्षा स्त्री के अधिकार को कम करती हैं जैसै यात्रा, कार्य , विवाह के लिए पुरुष के आदेश की आवश्यकता होती है . सच तो यह है कि परंपरागत मुस्लिम विवाह दो पुरुषों वर और वधू के अभिभावकों के बीच संबंध है . यहां तक प्रयास होता है कि युगल का आपसी जुड़ाव नहीं होना चाहिए . इस बात को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कि अपनी पत्नी के प्रति भावनात्माक संबंध जोड़कर ईश्वर के प्रति अपने कर्तव्यों की अवहेलना न करें, मुस्लिम पारिवारिक जीवन दंपत्ति के कर्तव्यों और रुचियों को विभाजित कर उनके संबंधों का संतुलन बिगाड़ दिया जाता है ( वह अपने पति की सहयोगी की बजाए नौकर होती है ) और वैवाहिक संबंधों के उपर माता -पुत्र के संबंध को प्राथमिकता दी जाती है. कुल मिलाकर मुसलमान स्त्री पुरुष संबंधों के पूर्व आधुनिक समय के इस्लामी विचारों के साथ जुड़ते हैं. तो भी यह बैचैनी व्याप्त रहती है कि महिलायें अपने प्रतिबंधों से आगे आ जायेंगी और समुदाय के लिए रास्ता खोल देंगी .
