Coal , coke , lime , soda ash and caustic soda were indigenously available , but the supplies of the last two were not adequate . कोयला , कोक , चूना , सोडा क्षार , और कास्टिक सोडा भी देश में ही उपलब्ध था , लेकिन सोडा क्षार और कास्टिक सोडा की उपलब्धि पर्याप्त मात्रा में नहीं थी .

The foundation of the heavy chemicals industry was laid in 1941 when the production of sulphuric acid , synthetic ammonia , caustic soda , chlorine and bleaching powder was begun . भारी कैमिकल उद्योग की आधारशिला सन् 1941 में रखी गयी जब सल्फ्यूरिक एसिड , सिंथेटिक अमोनिया , कास्टिक सोडा , क़्लोरीन और ब्लीचिंग पाउडर का उत्पादन शुरू किया गया .
