"NP " drift stations carry out the program of complex year-round research in the fields of oceanology, ice studies, meteorology, aerology, geophysics, hydrochemistry, hydrophysics, and marine biology.

In April 1943, SACO began setting up camps ( later known as units when Naval Group China was established ) to train Chinese guerrillas in small arms, demolition, sabotage, combat techniques, radio handling, aircraft and ship recognition, and aerology.

A wide range of manual and automated instruments are used at the Station, including the aerology program measuring conditions in the upper atmosphere using a radiosonde carried aloft by a hydrogen-filled weather balloon to altitudes beyond, and a program collecting data on background levels of carbon dioxide, which began there in 1974.

Two days out of Buckner Bay, on 7 October, the barometer began to plummet; and, as " Valentine's " historian recorded, " all indications pointed to some pretty rough weather .
