Persons who from having been born within British territory are British subjects, but who at birth became under the law of any foreign state subjects of such state, and also persons who though born abroad are British subjects by reason of parentage, may by declarations of alienage get rid of British nationality.

So while a board clearly could not prohibit a sale or rental to an individual merely because that person's ancestors were, say, British, it is not so clear whether discrimination based on an individual's " citizenship status " _ also referred to as " alienage " _ is prohibited by state law.

The respondents sought ( 1 ) a declaration that the statute was invalid under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, ( 2 ) injunctive relief against any refusal, on the ground of alienage, to appoint and employ the respondents, and all persons similarly situated, in civil service positions in the competitive class, and ( 3 ) damages for lost earnings.

One thing more : at the close of the Civil War, when the problem of the emancipated slaves was before the nation, it might have left them in a condition of alienage, or established them as wards of the government, like the Indian tribes, and thus retained for the nation jurisdiction over them, or it might, as it did, give them citizenship.

In 2005, the reauthorization of VAWA defined what population benefited under the term of " Underserved Populations " described as " Populations underserved because of geographic location, underserved racial and ethnic populations, populations underserved because of special needs ( such as language barriers, disabilities, alienage status, or age ) and any other population determined to be underserved by the Secretary of Health and Human Services as appropriate ".

It is for us to accept the decision, which declined to constitute them wards of the nation or leave them in a condition of alienage where they would be subject to the jurisdiction of Congress, but gave them citizenship, doubtless believing that thereby, in the long run, their best interests would be subserved, they taking their chances with other citizens in the states where they should make their homes.

It relieves them from the disabilities of alienage in other States; it inhibits discriminating legislation against them by other States; it gives them the right of free ingress into other States, and egress from them; it insures to them in other States the same freedom possessed by the citizens of those States in the acquisition and enjoyment of property and in the pursuit of happiness; and it secures to them in other States the equal protection of their laws.

The General Term of the first department of the supreme court of this State is hereby authorized to waive the alienage of Hong Yen Chang, a native of China, but now a resident of the city, county and State of New York, and to regularly admit and license him to the practice as an attorney and counselor at law in all the courts of this State, on his passing in a satisfactory manner the usual examination for the admission of attorneys and counselors.
