There's plenty of room for confusion : turnips ( Brassica rapa ) and rutabagas ( Brassica napus ) are close relatives, and in fact, rutabagas are believed to be the result of a relatively recent ( probably medieval ) natural cross between a turnip and some kind of cabbage.
