Franklin et al . performed a sensitive immuno-cytochemical assay by using a combination of four monoclonal antibodies ( 260F9, 520C9, 317G5 and BrE-3 ) against tumor cell surface glycoproteins to identify breast tumour cells in bone marrow and peripheral blood.

Similarly, the landmark trials of Bernard Fisher, chair of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, and of Gianni Bonadonna, working in the Istituto Nazionale Tumori di Milano, Italy, proved that adjuvant chemotherapy after complete surgical resection of breast tumours significantly extended survival particularly in more advanced cancer.

The Panel noted that some studies conducted on developing animals have suggested BPA-related effects of possible toxicological relevance, in particular biochemical changes in brain, immune-modulatory effects and enhanced susceptibility to breast tumours but considered that those studies had several shortcomings so the relevance of these findings for human health could not be assessed.
