During his long career he undertook important pioneering research on serious pests such as the red-legged earth mite, buffalo fly, lucerne fly, cattle tick, clothes moth and the New Guinea screw-worm fly.

The prevalence of cattle tick meant that depression until 1939 . Additionally, during the interwar period, three new diseases in northern stock were recognised-buffalo fly, Pegleg ( due to phosphate deficiency ) and ephemeral fever.

Dung beetles feed on the larvae of buffalo flies as they develop in animal dung and had already been identified as a possibility for controlling the buffalo fly s population when Wright joined the CSIRO-Australia research team in Africa.

It was surmised that the introduction of dung beetles to Australia would also have a reducing effect on the number of bush flies ( " Musca vetustissima " ) and the blood-sucking buffalo fly ( " Haematobia irritans exigua " ).
