But in spite of all this , caste distinctions became more rigid because in this loose structure of Puranic religion and culture , the real binding force was provided by the Brahmins and their power and influence depended on the caste system . किंतु इस सबके बावजूद जाति भेद और कड़े बन गये , क़्योकि पौराणिक धर्म और संस्कृति इस शिथिल ढांचे में,वास्तविक बंधन पैदा करने वाली शक़्ति ब्राह्मणों द्वारा दी जाती थी.और उनकी ताकत और प्रभाव जाति प्रथा पर निर्भर करता था .

One would have expected that the Muslims , whose religion does not recognise any form of social distinction , would have no social hierarchy , but we find that they have actually developed something like a caste system by dividing themselves into racial and hereditary vocational groups . कोई यह अपेक्षा करता होगा कि मुसलमान जिनका धर्म किसी भी प्रकार के सामाजिक भेदभाव को मान्यता नहीं देता , की कोई सामाजिक वंश परंपरा नहीं होगी , किंतु हम पाते हैं कि उन्होने अपने को जातिगत तथा वंशानुगत व्यावसायिक समुदायों में विभाजित कर वास्तव में कुछ जाति प्रथा के समान विकसित कर लिया है .
