Throughout their tours, the band supports research for choroideremia through " Angels for Mark " and donates proceeds from sales of their single " March Of The Metal Soldiers " to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Electronic retinal implants have already been trialled to treat retinitis pigmentosa, and trials are now being conducted to treat choroideremia through gene-therapy : implanting missing or faulty genes to correct retinal dystrophies ( inherited conditions ).

In healthy individuals, REP1 is found throughout all of the cells of the body, however patients with choroideremia only experience vision loss, and not broader, systemic symptoms ( with the exception of a study that found crystals and fatty acid abnormalities in leukocytes ).

For retinal prostheses, which are the most prevalent visual prosthetic under development ( due to ease of access to the retina among other considerations ), patients with vision loss due to degeneration of photoreceptors ( retinitis pigmentosa, choroideremia, geographic atrophy macular degeneration ) are the best candidate for treatment.

Foundation-funded scientists at institutions throughout the world conduct research for the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases including : retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, Best disease, choroideremia, retinoschisis, Leber's congenital amaurosis, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, cone dystrophy, cone-rod dystrophy, rod-cone dystrophy, achromatopsia, Refsum disease, and other rare retinal degenerative diseases.
