"Dr . J . K . Suckow was drilling a well for water 4?miles northwest of Boron when he discovered colemanite, a borax ore, in October 1913.

It is known to occur in over a hundred different minerals and ores, however : the main source is borax, but it is also found in colemanite, boracite, kernite, tusionite, berborite and fluoborite.

The borax deposit here was discovered in 1913, by John K . Sukow, who when drilling for water found a deposit of what he believed to be gypsum, but further testing revealed that it was the colemanite form of borax.

By December 1907, the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad ( TTR ) began service to Rhyolite on tracks leased from the BGR . The TTR was built to reach the borax-bearing colemanite beds in Death Valley as well as the gold fields.

The discovery of the borate mineral colemanite in the Calico mountains a few years after the settlement of the town also helped Calico's fortunes, and in 1890 the estimated population of the town was 3, 500, with nationals of China, England, Ireland, Greece, France, and the Netherlands, as well as Americans living there.
