The 18 hole golf course is a par 71 and measures 6, 267 metres, with gently undulating couch grass fairways, bent grass greens and revetted-edge style bunkering providing its own unique characteristics reminiscent of the traditional Scottish links courses.

In October 1925, the park was described as being tastefully laid out and planted with ornamental trees, shrubs with foliage of variegated colours, and lawns of couch grass, and attracted hundreds of people to the Sunday evening band and orchestral concerts.

Perennial weeds with bulbils, such as lesser celandine and oxalis, or with persistent underground stems such as couch grass ( " Agropyron repens " ) or creeping buttercup ( " Ranunculus repens " ) store reserves of food, and are thus able to grow faster and with more vigour than their annual counterparts.

A new sexton, William Parsons, was appointed, and by his efforts the principal pathway was metalled and bordered with variegated hedging plants and crotons, flowering shrubs and trees were planted along the fence fronting McLeod Street, the graves were cleared of weed and spear grass, and couch grass imported from the south was laid.

Thorpe started his career as an actor, and is the author of many BBC radio dramas starring, among others, Tara Fitzgerald, Sian Phillips and Patrick Malahide; his one-stage play, " Couch Grass and Ribbon ", written almost entirely in Berkshire dialect, was performed at the Watermill Theatre, Berkshire, in 1996.
