This history comes to mind because an Iranian spokesman recently enunciated a somewhat similar threat against Bahrain . Hossein Shariatmadari, an associate of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and editor of the daily newspaper Kayhan , published an op-ed on July 9 in which he claimed: “Bahrain is part of Iran's soil, having been separated from it through an illegal conspiracy [spawned] by ... Shah [Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, along with] the American and British governments.” Referring to Bahrain's majority Shiite population, Mr. Shariatmadari went on to claim, without any proof: “The principal demand of the Bahraini people today is to return this province … to its mother, Islamic Iran.” यह इतिहास मस्तिष्क में आया क्योंकि हाल में ईरानी प्रवक्ता ने बहरीन के समबन्ध में ऐसी ही धमकी दी है। ईरान के सर्वोच्च नेता अली खोमैनी के सहयोगी तथा केहोन दैनिक समाचार पत्र के सम्पादक हुसैन शरियतमदारी ने एक जुलाई को सम्पादकीय पृष्ठ पर एक लेख में दावा किया ‘ बहरीन ईरानी भूमि का एक भाग है जिसे अमेरिका, ब्रिटेन तथा शाह(मोहम्मद रजा पहलवी) के षड्यन्त्र से अलग कर दिया गया ''।
