In an era when the battle for public opinion has an importance that rivals the clash of soldiers, the Palestinian Arabs' success in framing the issues has won them critical support among politicians, editorial writers, academics, street demonstrators, and NGO activists. In the aggregate, these many auxiliaries keep the Palestinian effort alive. एक ऐसे युग में जब सैनिकों के संघर्ष से अधिक महत्व जन मानस की धारणा का है , फिलीस्तीनी अरब ऐसे मुद्दों का निर्माण करने में सफल रहे हैं जिससे उन्हें राजनेताओं , संपादकीय लेखकों , अकादमिकों , सड़क पर प्रदर्शन करने वालों तथा गैर-सरकारी संगठनों के कार्यकर्ताओं के बीच समर्थन मिल रहा है. कुल मिलाकर इन बाहरी प्रयासों ने फिलीस्तीनी प्रयासों को जीवित रखा है .

Pessimism serves as a career enhancer in Middle East studies and I am known for doom-and-gloom. But, with due hesitation, I see changes that could augur a new era, one in which infantilized Arabic-speakers mature into adults. One rubs one's eyes at this transformation, awaiting its reversal. So far, however, it has held. Perhaps the most genial symbol of this maturation is the pattern of street demonstrators cleaning up after themselves. No longer are they wards of the state dependent on it for services; of a sudden, they are citizens with a sense of civic responsibility. मध्य पूर्व के अध्ययन में निराशावाद सदैव से कैरियर को मजबूत करने वाला सिद्ध हुआ है और मुझे तो निराशा और उदासी का पर्याय ही माना जाता है। लेकिन कुछ हिचकिचाहट के साथ मुझे इन परिवर्तनों में नये युग की आहट सुनायी देती है एक ऐसा युग जिसमें नवजात अरब भाषी वयस्क होने की ओर अग्रसर हैं। इस बदलाव पर कोई भी अपनी आँख मल सकता है और इसके उलट होने की प्रतीक्षा कर सकता है। लेकिन अभी तक तो यही हुआ है।

This nonsense points to a U.S. policy in deep disarray. In June 2009, during a would-be revolution against a hostile regime in Iran, the Obama administration stayed mum, hoping thereby to win Tehran's good will. But with Mr. Mubarak, a friendly dictator under assault, it effectively adopted George W. Bush's impatient “freedom agenda” and supported the opposition. Mr. Obama seemingly encourages street demonstrators only against our side. इस अज्ञानता से तो यही लगता है कि अमेरिका की नीति पूरी तरह अव्यवस्था की स्थिति में है। जून 2009 में ईरान में लगभग क्रांति की सी स्थिति में ओबामा प्रशासन मौन बना रहा ताकि तेहरान की सदिच्छा प्राप्त की जा सके। लेकिन जब मुबारक जो कि मित्रवत तानाशाह रहे हैं जब उनपर आक्रमण हुआ तो इसने प्रभावी रूप से जार्ज ड्बल्यू बुश के “ स्वतन्त्रता एजेंन्डे” को अपनाया और विपक्ष का सहयोग किया। एक तरह से तो श्रीमान ओबामा ने सडक पर प्रदर्शनकारियों को हमारे विरुद्ध ही सहयोग दिया है।

Nepalese responded to this atrocity by venting their anger by assaulting the Muslim minority in Nepal. Hundreds of infuriated young men surrounded Katmandu's one mosque on Aug. 31 and heaved rocks at it. Violence escalated the next day, with five thousand demonstrators taking to the street, yelling slogans like “We want revenge,” “Punish the Muslims,” and “Down with Islam.” Some attacked the mosque, broke into it, ransacked it, and set fire to it. Hundreds of Korans were thrown onto the street, and some were burned. नेपाल के लोगों ने इस क्रूरता पर प्रतिक्रिया करते हुए नेपाल के अल्पसंख्यक मुसलमानों पर अपना क्रोध निकाला. 31 अगस्त को सैकड़ों गुस्साये युवकों ने काठमाण्डू की एक मस्जिद को घेर लिया और उस पर पत्थर बरसाये. अगले दिन यह हिंसा और भी फैली तथा पांच हजार प्रदर्शनकारी सड़कों पर उतरे और “ हमें बदला चाहिए', ‘मुसलमानों को दण्ड दो',इस्लाम का पराभव हो जैसे नारे लगाने लगे. कुछ ने मस्जिद पर हमला बोल दिया, उसमें घुस गये,उसे लूट लिया और आग लगा दी.सैकड़ों कुरान सड़क पर फेंक दी गई और कुछ में आग लगा दी गई.

Indeed, every act of Muslim aggression against non-Muslims, be it violent or cultural, recruits more activists to the anti-jihad cause, more voters to insurgent parties, more demonstrators to anti-immigrant street efforts, and more donors to anti-Islamist causes. इसके चलते क्या होगा यह अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है: इससे कुछ पश्चिमी लोग इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचने को प्रेरित होंगे कि इस्लामवाद के चलते उनकी जीवन पद्दति खतरे में है। निश्चित रूप से गैर मुस्लिम लोगों के विरुद्ध प्रत्येक मुस्लिम आक्रामकता चाहे वह हिंसक हो या सांस्कृतिक हो जिहाद विरोधी कार्य के लिये अधिक संख्या में कार्यकर्ताओं को साथ लाती है, उग्रवादी राजनीतिक दलों के समर्थन में अधिक मतदाताओं को लाती है, आप्रवास विरोध में अधिक प्रदर्शकारियों को सडकों पर उतारती है तथा इस्लामवाद विरोधी उद्देश्य के लिये अधिक आर्थिक सहायता करने वालों को सामने लाती हैं।

I hope Israelis are preparing to contend with this phenomenon, from gathering intelligence to training troops to deal with demonstrators to responding with smart political arguments. The last point is especially important. In the past, Arab leaders ranted and made preposterous arguments, but now they're getting better, more rational, more appealing. Their political campaign of delegitimization will likely reach new heights with a General Assembly resolution in September.
