"Dimorphodon " has been envisioned as a puffin analogue in the past, but its jaw structure and gait, combined with its poor flight capabilities, indicate that it was a terrestrial / semiarboreal feeder.

In the 1980s, paleontologist Kevin Padian suggested that smaller pterosaurs with longer hindlimbs, such as " Dimorphodon ", might have walked or even run bipedally, in addition to flying, like trackways were later found with a distinctive four-toed hind foot and three-toed front foot; these are the unmistakable prints of pterosaurs walking on all fours.

An additional species of " Dimorphodon ", " D . weintraubi ", was named by James Clark " et al " in 1998 from a partial skeleton recovered in siltstones from the site Huizachal Canyon in La Boca Formation in Tamaulipas, Mexico, from the Early Jurassic ( Pliensbachian ), where remains of sphenodontians, dinosaurs and mammaliaforms have also been found.

Other recent phylogenetic analyses confirm these results, and suggest that " Campylognathoides " is more derived than all Triassic-aged pterosaurs, as well as the Early Jurassic " Dimorphodon " and " Parapsicephalus " . " Campylognathoides " is the basalmost member of the Novialoidea which is defined as a node-based taxon consisting of the last common ancestor of " Campylognathoides ", " Quetzalcoatlus " and all its descendants.
