He translated Tobias Smollett's " The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle ", and composed the table of contents for a 1749 edition of " L'Esprit des Lois " ( " The Spirit of the Laws " ) by Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu.

His chief works are the five-volume " El�ments d'id�ologie " ( 1817 1818 ), the first volume of which was presented as " Ideology Strictly Defined, " and which completed the arguments made in earlier completed monographs; " Commentaire sur l'esprit des lois de Montesquieu " ( 1806 ), and " Essai sur le g�nie, et les ouvrages de Montesquieu " ( 1808 ) . which he titled " Trait?de la volont?" ( " Treatise on the Will and Its Effects " ).

Despite controversy about the limits of their philosophy, especially when they denounced black slavery, many Lumi�res criticised slavery, or colonialism, or both, including Montesquieu in " De l'Esprit des Lois " ( while keeping a " personal " slave ), Denis Diderot in " Suppl�ment au voyage de Bougainville ", Voltaire in " Candide " and Guillaume-Thomas Raynal in his encyclopaedic " Histoire des deux Indes ", the very model of 18th-century anticolonialism to which, among others, Diderot and d Holbach contributed.
