Atatürk and Taha aside, Muslims have barely begun the long, arduous path to making Islam modern. In addition to the inherent difficulties of overhauling a seventh-century order to fit the ethos of a Western-dominated twenty-first century, the Islamist movement which today dominates Muslim intellectual life pulls in precisely the opposite direction from democracy. Instead, it fights to revive the whole of the Sharia and to apply it with exceptional severity, regardless of what the majority wants. अतातुर्क और तहा को अलग कर दें तो मुसलमानों ने शायद ही इस्लाम को आधुनिक बनाने के लम्बे और कठिन मार्ग का आरम्भ भी कभी किया हो। सातवीं शताब्दी की व्यवस्था को पूरी तरह बदल कर उसे इक्कीसवीं सदी के पश्चिम प्रभावित सिद्धान्तों के अनुकूल बनाने के बजाय आज का इस्लामवादी आंदोलन जो कि मुस्लिम बुद्धिजीवी वर्ग को प्रभावित करता है वह उसे लोकतंत्र से दूसरी ही दिशा में धकेल रहा है। इसके बजाय यह शरिया को पूरी तरह पुनर्जीवित करने के लिये और पूरी कठोरता से लागू करने के लिये संघर्ष कर रहा है भले ही बहुसंख्यक समाज जो भी चाहे।

Elaborated about a millennium ago in quasi-tribal circumstances and operating within a vastly different ethos from today's, the code contains a range of features deeply unacceptable to a modern sensibility, including the anti-democratic ideas of the will of God prevailing over that of the people, military jihad as a legitimate means to expand rule by Muslims, the superiority of Muslims over non-Muslims, and of males over females. इस्लाम में राजनीतिक सहभागिता को प्रोत्साहित करने की प्रकिया में इसके स्वभाव में बडा परिवर्तन अंतर्निहित है विशेष रूप से इसकी विधि संहिता शरिया जो कि अर्ध कबीलाई परिस्थिति में एक सहस्र्ताब्दी पहले वर्णित की गयी थी जो कि आज की स्थिति से पूरी तरह भिन्न स्थिति में लागू होती थी और इस पूरी संहिता में अनेक ऐसी विशेषतायें हैं जो कि आधुनिक समझदारी के हिसाब से अस्वीकार्य हैं जिसमें कि लोगों की इच्छा से बडा भगवान की इच्छा होने जैसा अलोकतांत्रिक विचार , सैन्य जिहाद को मुसलमानों के शासन के विस्तार के लिये वैधानिक तरीका माना जाना, गैर मुस्लिम के ऊपर मुस्लिम की श्रेष्ठता और साथ ही स्त्री के ऊपर पुरुष की श्रेष्ठता।
