In a felsenmeer or blockfield, freeze-thaw weathering has broken up the top layer of the rock, covering the underlying rock formation with jagged, angular boulders.

Two trails run over the summit ridge on directly over and through the H�ttenberg Felsenmeer; the other running alongside the blockfield to the east and just below it.

Close to Frankenstein Castle, a large " felsenmeer " ( " sea of rocks " ) near the village of Lautertal is assumed to be a major scene of the Nibelungenlied.

Allegedly, the dragon slayer Siegfried, on a hunting trip leading him from the Burgundian city of Worms into the Odenwald, was murdered by Hagen of Tronje at the Felsenmeer's " Siegfriedsquelle " ( " Siegfried's wellspring " ).

The Palatine Wine Route, opened in autumn 2010 and certified as a " Pr�dikatsweg " in 2011 by the German Alpine and Rambling Club Association, also crosses the felsenmeer as part of the 4th stage and finally reaches the long descent to the wine-growing village of Sankt Martin.
