In 1954 he began a long collaboration with Beatrice Sweeney, who was then at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography ( La Jolla, CA ), in elucidating the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of luminescence in the unicellular dinoflagellate " Lingulodinium polyedrum " ( formerly " Gonyaulax polyedra " ).
