As imperial coinage became more readily available from the late 20th century these " �n Goods " sets were used to barter with the indigenous and Griqua people although the indigenous people continued to use them as their currency right up to 1932.

In 1825, a faction of the Griqua people was induced by Dr John Philip, superintendent of the London Missionary Society in Southern Africa, to relocate to a place called Philippolis, a mission station for the San, several hundred miles southeast of Griqualand.

In 1871, soon after the diamond discovery, the land was being claimed by the local Griqua people ( represented by their agent David Arnot ), by the Orange Free State, by the British, and even by migrant diggers who had staged a revolt.

Following a raid into the Cape Colony and the death of a white farmer, Jager was outlawed in 1799 . Local farmers could not be encouraged to pursue Jager, but instead formed alliances which eventually led to the formation of the Griqua people in combined defence against Jager and his allies.

By presenting the novel as the work of an amanuensis creating a narrative out of the scattered statements of the central character, David Dirkse, Wicomb raises questions about the writing of history in a period of political instability, and by relating the stories of the Griqua people from whom Dirkse is, in part ( like Wicomb ), descended, it exposes the dangers of ethnic exclusiveness.
