The unit provided direct and general support to the 82d Airborne Division in the form of intelligence collection, analysis, and dissemination; counterintelligence and interrogation; signals intelligence, including ground and air based intercept, jamming, and direction finding; remote battlefield sensors and ground surveillance radar; moving target indicators; and long range surveillance.

MASINT will include ground surveillance radars ( PPSSD ) and the Improved Remotely Monitored Battlefield Sensor System ( I-REMBASS ) aboard a shelter-mounted HMMWV . Prophet, with the I-REMBASS monitoring system, will form the Ground Sensor Platoon of the brigade combat team Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition ( RSTA ) Squadron.

However, rather than just rely upon static defences, the United States Air Force pioneered the use of remote detection equipment, such as seismic detectors and ground surveillance radar, to detect infiltrators, and to respond to these infiltrators with rifle squads mounted in heavily armed Cadillac Gage Commando and M113 armored personnel carriers.

Major projects undertaken by the Electronic Systems Division included Advanced Air Defence Simulator ( AADS ) to train Australian Army operators in the SAAB Bofors Dynamics RBS-70 Ground Based Air Defence weapon, LAND 53, Phase 1E Ninox Ground Surveillance Radar, Phase 1F Ninox Thermal Surveillance System and Phase 2B Ninox Unattended Ground Sensors.

The Cobra vehicle forms a common platform which can be adapted for various roles and mission requirements including : Armoured Personnel Carrier, Anti-Tank Vehicle, Reconnaissance Vehicle, Ground Surveillance Radar Vehicle, Forward Observation Vehicle, Armoured Ambulance, Armoured Command Post, turreted vehicle for 12.7mm machine gun ( turret produced by the Israeli firm Spike missile or surface-to-air missiles.

Beginning in the early 1980s, some elements of the combat support companies ( the mortar and scout platoons ) were merged into the headquarters company with the staff and support elements, others were moved to their parent type organization ( ground surveillance radar and air defense ), and in infantry battalions the heavy anti-tank missile platoon was organized as a separate company ( E Company ).
