It typically occurs 1 4 weeks after a pharyngeal infection with this bacterium, and is likely to present with malaise, a slight fever, nausea and a mild nephritic syndrome of moderately increased blood pressure, gross haematuria, and smoky-brown urine.

Local medicinal uses include as a treatment for chest infections, haematuria, diarrhoea, dysentery and bronchitis . " P . nitida " is found in Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Examination of the urine ( urinalysis ) allows a direct assessment for possible kidney problems, which may be suggested by appearance of blood in the urine ( haematuria ), protein in the urine ( proteinuria ), pus cells in the urine ( pyuria ) or cancer cells in the urine.

Other signs and symptom may include haematuria; loin pain; abdominal mass; malaise, which is a general feeling of feeling unwell; weight loss and / or loss of appetite; anaemia resulting from depression of erythropoietin; erythrocytosis ( increased production of red blood cells ) due to increased erythropoietin secretion; varicocele, which is seen in males as an enlargement of the pampiniform plexus of veins draining the testis ( more often the left testis ) hypertension ( high blood pressure ) resulting from secretion of renin by the tumour; hypercalcemia, which is elevation of calcium levels in the blood; sleep disturbance or night sweats; recurrent fevers; and chronic fatigue.
