Trends : As someone who's been watching that clash since Khomeini's time, I ascertain three main trends. First, Muslims increasingly devote themselves to the political imperative of preserving Muhammad's sanctity. Second, Western governments and elites (i.e., journalists, lawyers, intellectuals, artists) have become increasingly timid over time when facing Islamist fury, willing to apologize, appease, and placate; for one appalling example, see the U.S. embassy in Cairo 's effusions on this Sept. 11, as a mob raged outside. Third, Western non-elites have increasingly responded to Islamists with a You-want-to-be-insulted-well-take-this! attitude that includes Koran burnings, “Defeat Jihad” ads , belligerently offensive French cartoons , and a promised roll-out of Muhammad movies . In combination, these three points lead me to predict that the conflict over values will continue to heat up. रुझान:खोमैनी के समय से ही इस संघर्ष को देखते आ रहे एक व्यक्ति के रूप में कुल तीन रुझान मैं समझ पा रहा हूँ । पहला, मुसलमान धीरे धीरे मुहम्मद की पवित्रता को बचाने के लिये उसकी राजनीतिक अनिवार्यता के प्रति समपर्पित होते जा रहे हैं। दूसरा, पश्चिमी सरकारें और कुलीन वर्ग( पत्रकार, वकील, बुद्धिजीवी , कलाकार) इस्लामवादी आक्रोश का सामना करने में भयभीत हो रहे हैं और क्षमा माँगना, तुष्टीकरण करना, उनका प्रयास होता है । इसका उदाहरण 11 सितम्बर को कैरो में अमेरिकी दूतावास के बाहर आयी भीड के बाद दी गयी प्रतिक्रिया रही । तीसरा, पश्चिम के गैर कुलीन इस्लामवादियों को प्रतिक्रिया में कह रहे हैं कि आप अपमानित होना चाहते हैं तो यह लीजिये, इसमें कुरान को जलाना, जिहाद विज्ञापन को पराजित करना, फ्रांस का कार्टून और मुहम्मद की फिल्म की घोषणा के उपरांत उसे दिखाना ।
