Initial radars installed were AN / FPS-3C long Range Search Radar; AN / FPS-502 small surveillance radar, AN / FPS-87A general Surveillance and an AN / TPS-502 height finder radar.

In July 1956 the 603d ACW departed for Birkenfeld AS . With the arrival, Giebelstat was upgraded to the AN / FPS-20 General Surveillance Radar and the AN / FPS-6 Long-Range Height Finder Radar.

In 1958 enough of the structure was complete that one AN / FPS-3 search radar and two AN / FPS-6 height finder radars developed by Air Force Rome Air Development Center [ RADC ] New York, were installed.

A major disadvantage of this arrangement, however, was that most MiG contacts were beyond the 70-mile range of the Big Eye's APS-45 Height Finder radar, so that they were unable to provide this crucial data to USAF strike forces.
