In the twentieth century the growth of traffic using the road, with resulting accidents and congestion on what was a humpback bridge with poor visibility and narrow approach roads, led to many proposals to by-pass the bridge.

In 1889 the station, which by now had been renamed "'Kildwick and Crosshills "'and was owned by the Midland Railway, was relocated ?mile to the west, by a humpback bridge on the road now known as Station Road.

The main settlement is the Spittal of Glenshee, now by-passed, which has a historic hotel, first run by monks from Coupar Angus Abbey to provide shelter and hospitality for travellers, hence the name " Spittal ", an outdoor activity centre, self-catering lodges, the church and an original General Wade humpback bridge.

Towards the start of 2005, contact was made between Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council regarding signage for the area, which is defined as being between the Hawkesbury Lane railway crossing on Black Horse Road, where Hawkesbury Lane station used to be, and the humpback bridge over the Coventry Canal, alongside Hawkesbury Junction, where the Oxford Canal starts.

On December 4, the agencies announced that PWA money would be used to construct bridges on the north and south ends of the island in anticipation of links with Lee Highway and a new highway the state of Virginia and Arlington County were discussing constructing in the south . ( The southern bridge carrying the parkway became known as the Humpback Bridge because it had a slight rise in its center . ) To connect to these bridges, completion of the roads on Columbia Island was also needed.

It adjoins the West Heath part of Hampstead Heath and is on the site formerly occupied by a large house which was bombed during World War II . Its main characteristic is an expanse of grass, but it also has a formal, beautifully tended, flower garden next to a duck pond with a small humpback bridge, a separate water garden, which leads onto a larger pond with both black and white swans, a separate area for fallow deer, near to a recently renovated small zoo.
