In one study, transcranial light therapy of rats was shown to aid in memory retention and was associated with an increase in metabolic activity in the prefrontal cortex . ( 22 ) Since Alzheimer s disease and mild cognitive impairments tend to be associated with cortical hypometabolism, the findings of this study hint to the potential use of transcranial light therapy for these memory disorders . ( 22 ) Furthermore, a study using transgenic mice exhibiting the neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plagues characteristic of Alzheimer s disease supports this notion.
