The spacecraft will employ a Launch Escape System ( LES ) like that used in Mercury and Apollo, along with an Apollo-derived " Boost Protective Cover " ( made of fiberglass ), to protect the Orion CM from aerodynamic and impact stresses during the first minutes of ascent.
