The despun section's instruments included the camera system; the near infrared mapping spectrometer to make multi-spectral images for atmospheric and moon surface chemical analysis; the ultraviolet spectrometer to study gases; and the photopolarimeter-radiometer to measure radiant and reflected energy.

In the new Survey orbit, " Dawn " circled Ceres every three Earth days . The Survey phase lasted 22 days ( 7 orbits ), and was designed to obtain a global view of Ceres with " Dawn " framing camera, and generate detailed global maps with the visible and infrared mapping spectrometer ( VIR ).

Tawhaki Patera was first seen as a dark spot in low-resolution " Voyager 1 " in March 1979 . However, volcanic activity was not observed at Tawhaki until September 1997 when a bright thermal hotspot was observed at near-infrared wavelengths while Io was in the shadow of Jupiter by the camera on the " Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer ( NIMS ).
