It passes distally in the anterior interosseous membrane and innervates the long flexor muscles of the thumb ( FPL ), index and middle finger ( FDP ).

The fibers within the interosseous membrane are oriented obliquely so that when force is applied the fibers are drawn taut, shifting more of the load to the ulna.

Additionally, as the forearm moves from pronation to supination, the interosseous membrane fibers change from a relaxed state, to a tense state in the neutral position.

At the upper border of the pronator quadratus muscle it pierces the interosseous membrane and reaches the back of the forearm, where it anastomoses with the dorsal interosseous artery.

It arises also from the adjacent part of the interosseous membrane of the forearm, and generally by a fleshy slip from the medial border of the coronoid process of the ulna.

The distal radio-ulnar joint dislocation can be reduced by supination of the forearm, and may be pinned in place for 6 weeks to allow healing of the interosseous membrane.

To the posterior of the two ridges the lower part of the interosseous membrane is attached, while the triangular surface between the ridges gives insertion to part of the pronator quadratus muscle.

Further characterized by the " V triad " consisting of a ) radio-opaque band adjacent to growth plates, b ) hypertrophic calluses at fracture sites, and c ) calcification of the radio-ulnar interosseous membrane.

It arises from the anterior surface of the fibula for about the middle two-fourths of its extent, medial to the origin of the Extensor digitorum longus; it also arises from the interosseous membrane to a similar extent.

The muscle arises from the lower third of the anterior surface of the fibula ( anterior compartment of lower leg ); from the lower part of the interosseous membrane; and from an intermuscular septum between it and the peroneus brevis muscle.
